Couch Cover Blanket: How to Choose, Drape and Secure One
The simplest couch cover blanket setup is one large throw, sized to your sofa, draped over the back and seat, tucked into the creases and anchored so it stays put. Pick a tightly woven fabric you can wash or clean. Choose a blanket about 6 inches wider than your couch. You get most of what a slipcover gives you without hunting for a fitted cover.
The problem is that most blankets are sized for laps. Drape a 50-inch throw over a three-seat sofa and it covers a strip of the seat, exposes the back and arms, and slides off the first time the dog jumps up. So people buy a stretch slipcover that never fits quite right, or they give up and live with the stains.
This guide walks through the whole job: which fabric holds up, how to measure, how to drape the blanket, how to stop it from sliding, and how to care for it around pets and spills. The size examples use KOREDECOR's Indian wool throws, which we sell, but the method works with any large blanket.
Why a blanket works as a couch cover
A blanket works as a couch cover because it does the two jobs a slipcover does, hiding wear and taking spills, and it is easier to wash, swap and restyle. The trade-off is a looser, more relaxed look than a tailored cover.
What a blanket does better than a slipcover
Fitted slipcovers shift, bunch and need a close match to your sofa's shape. A large throw blanket needs no match. It drapes over any frame, from a sectional to a loveseat, and you can swap it for another blanket when the season changes.
The downside is grip. A blanket has no elastic or ties, so it only protects while it stays in place. That is why size (step 1) and anchoring (step 3) matter more than the price tag.
A blanket protects a couch only when it is big enough to cover the seat and back and anchored so it stays put.
Which fabric holds up best
Start with the weave. Tightly woven, flat fabrics resist claws and wipe clean. Loops and chunky knits catch on nails. Wool, cotton and linen are the durable choices most designers point to.
| Fabric | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Wool | Durable, warm, drapes well, holds its shape | Needs gentle care, so check the label |
| Cotton | Machine washable, light, many patterns | Light colors show stains, thin weaves slip |
| Linen | Breathable, softens with washing | Wrinkles, offers little protection against claws |
| Fleece or microfiber | Soft and inexpensive | Attracts pet hair, tends to pill |
| Chenille or chunky knit | Plush look | Loops snag on claws |
KOREDECOR's throws are hand-loomed, hand-spun, naturally dyed 100% Indian wool, from about $220. OPAL in beige and tan blends with most upholstery, while SPHENE in brown suits darker sofas.
What to call it, and what else works
Shops list this item as a couch throw, sofa throw, couch blanket or coverlet. They all mean a large blanket used as a cover. If you have no throw, a quilt, a linen bed cover, a flat sheet or even a large tablecloth works, as long as it is big enough to follow the steps below.
Step 1. Measure your couch and pick a size
Measure the width of the couch and the run from the top of the backrest to the front edge of the seat, then buy a blanket at least 6 inches wider than the couch and 8 inches longer than the run. Guessing is the main reason blankets look too small.

Take two measurements
- Width: measure across the front from the outer edge of one arm to the other.
- Run: measure from the top of the backrest, down the back cushions and across the seat to the front edge.
Then add your margins. Width plus 6 inches gives a tidy overhang. Run plus 8 inches gives a front drop and enough fabric to tuck.
Take a typical three-seat sofa: 84 inches wide, 36 inches of back height, 22 inches of seat depth. The width you need is 84 + 6 = 90 inches. The run is 36 + 22 + 8 = 66 inches. You need a blanket of at least 90 by 66 inches.
Match the measurements to a blanket size
KOREDECOR's Indian wool throws come in four sizes. This table shows what each one covers, based on the margins above.
| Size | Listed dimensions | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 42" x 92" | Runner across a seat, armchair or loveseat accent |
| Medium | 54" x 102" | Seat and lower back of a sofa up to about 96" wide |
| Large | 84" x 92" | Full coverage of a standard sofa up to about 86" wide |
| Extra Large | 104" x 102" | Oversized sofas up to about 98" wide, or a chaise |
Our example sofa needs the Large, which gives 2 inches of extra width and 18 extra inches of run to tuck. For a sectional, use one blanket per section rather than stretching one across the corner. If you are unsure, KOREDECOR support will help you choose by email.
Add 6 inches to the width and 8 inches to the run of your couch, and buy no smaller than that.
Step 2. Drape the blanket over the couch
Drape the blanket lengthwise from the top of the backrest down over the seat, with its long edge running along the width of the sofa, then tuck it into the creases. This takes about two minutes once the sofa is clear.

Cover the whole couch with one blanket
- Remove loose pillows and run a lint roller or vacuum over the sofa.
- Find the midpoint of one long edge of the blanket and line it up with the center of the backrest.
- Pull the blanket forward over the top, down the back cushions and across the seat.
- Push the fabric firmly into the crease where the seat meets the back, and along both arms.
- Leave 6 to 8 inches hanging over the front edge, smooth the surface, and put the pillows back.
Cover only the seat or the cushions
If you prefer a looser look, fold the blanket lengthwise into a wide runner and lay it over the seat only. Or wrap each cushion in a smaller throw, which works well for mismatched blankets or a sofa you are partly covering. Seat-only covers protect the area that takes the most wear and leave the frame visible.
Center the blanket on the backrest first, because every other edge lines up from there.
Step 3. Keep the blanket from sliding
To keep a throw from sliding, anchor it in the creases and add grip underneath. Wool and cotton are less slippery than silky fabrics, but any blanket moves once someone sits down or a pet hops up.

Anchor the blanket in the creases
| Method | How to do it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Foam tube | Cut a pool noodle to the width of the seat and push it into the crease with the blanket over it | Stopping the slide at the seat back |
| Blanket clips | Clip the fabric to itself at the arms | Sofas with rolled or wide arms |
| Non-slip pad | Place a rubber rug grip or shelf liner under the blanket on the seat | Smooth leather or microfiber |
| Weighted pillows | Rest pillows against the back and arms | Light, low-effort holding |
Use two methods together. A foam tube in the crease plus a pillow at each arm is enough for most households.
Adjust for heavy use
If pets or children climb on the sofa daily, tuck deeper and check weekly. Fabric works loose over time, and a quick re-tuck takes less than a minute. Avoid pins or staples, which damage upholstery.
Use two anchors, one in the crease and one at the arms, and the blanket will stay put.
Step 4. Handle pets, spills and washing
Treat the blanket as the part you wash, not the sofa. Shake it out weekly, blot spills immediately, and follow the care label. A blanket is not waterproof, so protect against leaks with a layer underneath.
Pets and claws
Choose a flat weave, not loops, so nails do not catch. Remove hair with a lint roller or a damp rubber glove. If your dog or cat sleeps on one spot, rotate the blanket every few weeks so wear spreads out. Two blankets in rotation also means one is always clean.
Spills and washing
Blot, do not rub, so the liquid does not spread into the weave. Wool is usually dry-cleaned or hand-washed gently, so check the label before you use water. Cotton throws can usually go in the washing machine.
For real waterproofing, such as a puppy or a toddler, place a washable waterproof pad under the blanket on the seat. The blanket then does the styling and the pad takes the leak.
Blot spills fast, wash on the label's terms, and put a waterproof pad underneath if leaks are likely.
Time to cover your couch
Measure the width and run, add your margins, drape the blanket from the backrest, anchor it in the creases and care for it by fabric. That is the whole method, and it works with any large throw.
